TORRES SCORES IN ATLETICO WIN OVER GUIJUELO

Fernando Torres was on target as Atletico Madrid progressed to the last 16 of the Copa del Rey.

Diego Simeone’s men thrashed third-tier Guijuelo 6-0 in the away leg last month with their qualification never in doubt.

The Atletico Madrid boss made the most of the opportunity to rest some of his big names as Antonie Griezmann, Yannick Carrasco, Saul Niguez, Diego Godin and Koke were given the night off.

It took the hosts just 17 minutes to take the lead at the Vicente Calderon through Nicolas Gaitan before Angel Correa soon made it two.

Juanfran added a third, and made it 9-0 on aggregate on the half hour mark with skipper Fernando Torres also getting on the scoresheet to make it 4-0 before the break.

Raul Ruiz’s red card made the minnows’ task even harder but they managed to keep a clean sheet during the second period. And they even managed to get on the scoresheet late on as substitute Pino found the back of the net with a simple finish from close range.

Villarreal also eased into the next round, despite only drawing with Toledo. The visitors, who trailed 3-0 from the first leg, took a surprise lead just before the hour mark, only for former Chelsea striker Alexandre Pato to level things up minutes later.

The big result of the night saw Cordoba defeat Malaga 6-3 on aggregate after a thrilling second leg.

The Segunda side had a two-goal lead from the home encounter before braces from Sandro Ramirez and Federico Piovaccari made it 2-2 on the night.

Malaga continued to push forward to try and get back into the game as Pedro Rios helped himself to a couple.

Elsewhere, Real Sociedad are through after a 4-2 aggregate success over Valladolid, while Las Palmas just edged out Huesca.
