Fernando Torres worried lack of Competition
Atletico Madrid striker Fernando Torres says that the lack of competition up front at the club coupled with his good form may just be sufficient to see him start the game against Villarreal.
After going through several months without a goal, Torres scored in back-to-back league matches recently. The goals against Eibar and Getafe have renewed confidence that the striker may be on the verge of rediscovering his golden touch, which has deserted him for a number of years now. As a result of these goals, Torres says that he is hoping to be in the starting line-up against Villarreal.
This is an important game for Atletico since three points will help them keep their heads above their arch rivals Real Madrid. They have been doing well enough to keep in touch with Barcelona, who seem unstoppable at the moment. The results are good enough for a team not expected to win the title. Even then, Torres says that the club needs to go on sale in the winning run in order to reclaim the league title after a one-year gap. The goal scoring run provides confidence for the ex-Spain international, whose loan spell from Milan is about to end in the summer.
Torres has taken his league tally to four after his latest goals.”I want to have a leading role and I haven’t had a regular run since I came back [from injury]. Maybe I haven’t earned it. I don’t choose the line-ups; you’d have to ask Simeone. I always train with the hope of playing 90 minutes, but I obviously have to improve,” said Torres. “Now we must focus on the league. We have to defend fourth place. We play a team who are very strong at home, but we are convinced that we can defend that fourth place in the table,” said Villarreal’sDenis Suarez.
