Fernando Torres still has 12 months left on his loan deal
Fernando Torres still has 12 months left on his loan deal with Atletico Madrid.
The AC Milan striker will stay at the Spanish club, where he is regarded as a hero, until the end of the 2015-16 season. After an up-and-down first six months since his return to the Vicente Calderon, Torres is hoping to win titles in the upcoming campaign. The striker had endured a torrid run of form in the last five years. He has played for the likes of Liverpool, Chelsea, and Milan during this period. However, his initial three years following the departure from Atletico were the best of his career.
Torres is keen to prevent the form but he will find shortage of first-team opportunities in the upcoming campaign. This is despite Atletico parting company with star striker Mario Mandzukic in the summer. The striker scored only six goals in 26 appearances last season for Atletico and he says that one of the reasons for this poor statistic is the difficulty involved in joining a team midway through the season. Torres had to go through a similar move in 2011, but the pressure involved right now is far less great since he has not cost £ 50 million this time around.
“It’s difficult to arrive midway through the season, as I did last season. We all want to play, and in the end the coach’s decision is fair. I took part in important moments for the team and, above all, helped to achieve the goal of ensuring Champions League football this season. The level of this Atlético team should be better than last season. Of course I want to win titles here, that’s what I’ve always wanted and I’ll fight for them. I want to give back to the fans what they gave to me,” said Torres.
